American Kenpo Legacy Association
Advanced Weapons Forms Series
The Forgotten Forms of American Kenpo
Cane Set #2 - Arm Bar Takedown

The advanced weapons forms of the American Kenpo Legacy Association are designed to enhance the knowledge and effectiveness of the Kenpo practitioner. These forms make usage of concepts, principles and theories of weapon usage and weapon retention that are vital for a complete education in Kenpo; and yet these theories are currently not included in any other Kenpo self defense techniques or forms. What you will learn from these advanced forms are not simply transplanted information from other martial arts styles, but carefully researched principles that are often overlooked within the existing Kenpo Material.

Background and Developmental History:

The material and design for these forms uses existing forms that never were included into the Kenpo curriculum by Ed Parker. These forms are Short Form 4, Short Form 5 and Mass Attack. When Ed Parker was designing forms, self-defense techniques and other curriculum for his American Kenpo Karate system, he had some his top black belts to experiment with the various forms. These forms were developed during the years of 1968-1969. After all of the forms had been developed, these three forms were left out of the curriculum. The empty hand version of these forms were designed in the following manner:

  • Mass Attack – self-defense techniques against multiple attackers.
  • Short Form 4 – the self defense techniques utilized in Long Form 4, except on one side only, the opposite side is not repeated.
  • Short Form 5 – the self defense techniques utilized in Long Form 5, except on one side only, the opposite side is not repeated.

All three of these forms are ‘asymmetric’ i.e., the technique sequences are continuous without repeat on the opposite side. Some of the main concepts that these forms possess relate to the use of the Universal Pattern. Mass Attack utilizes the ‘spiral’, Short form Five utilizes the ‘diamond’ and Short Form Four utilizes the concept of ‘compassing’. Kenpo Karate has always been encumbered with a great amount of material. Ed Parker chose, therefore, not to include these forms to prevent the belt system curriculum to become overly encumbered.

There has always been a great deal of interest in these forms, yet few have been taught them. Of these three forms, only Mass Attack is, and has been, utilized in belt curriculum (Mass Attack is 2nd Brown Belt Requirements in the Tracy System of Kenpo). The few American Kenpo instructors who may have knowledge of these forms often refuse to teach the forms, stating that “there is nothing ‘new’ to learn in the forms,” and label the inquiring student as a ‘collector’. The American Kenpo Legacy Association now presents these forms as curriculum in the advanced Black Belts of American Kenpo Karate. These forms are presented in their original form – with a modern adaptation – these forms are now executed with the weapons of the cane (walking stick), single stick and the Kenpo karambit. This allows for the growth of the advanced Kenpo student! Within these modern adaptations, new material is presented, while preserving the history and heritage of Ed Parker’s American Kenpo Karate. Some of the ‘new material’ that is presented in these forms is as follows:
